Hosted Images vs R2

Just a question about your R2 (media storage) feature:

Is this the same as what Cloudflare calls HOSTED IMAGES -- because that's the one we're signed up for in Cloudflare.

Cloudflare calls the version that is not hosted on their servers R2 and the version hosted on their servers IMAGES.

Thanks in advance!

It’s a little confusing because Images and R2 are both their servers. But ya… it’s specifically R2 with the plugin, the Images services honestly isn’t worth it in itself in my opinion (Image Transformations can still be used either way).

Wait, it says R2 is for serving from an external bucket rather than from their servers. Or am I reading this incorrectly?

All we want is to have the images offloaded to Cloudflare's servers, off our own servers, while still viewed on our site. We really don't need the transformations.

Here the last question/paragraph, Should I store with Images or R2?:

It's a bit confusing that question.

But anyway, I'm happy about this. I'll have the client buy the pro version of the plugin.

Thanks!

Ya… they definitely word it kind of strange. But no matter what they say in the Images documentation, R2 is offloading from your server to Cloudflare’s. If R2 wasn’t at least that, what would it be? 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

If you were starting fresh, yes. If you have content/images in Hosted Images, I wouldn’t just turn it off (again, no idea what’s in there currently).

As an example, the screenshot you just posted is not on my servers, it's in R2 (same with my avatar here). Just giving examples of how R2 works.

And yes... that pricing you see for R2 is correct (and all inclusive). Say you had 100GB of media, the first 10GB is free, the other 90GB would be $0.015 per GB (so $1.35) per month. Class A operations are effectively writes (uploading new media)... would be shocked if you were to be uploading more than 1,000,000/month. Class B operations are reads, but only non-cached reads... so 10,000,000 uncached reads is really going to be closer to 1,000,000,000+ real-world reads. So unless you are doing something crazy, a WordPress site doesn't get anywhere close to that. So for 100GB of media, your real out the door cost is $1.35/month for the storage (there's no bandwidth costs).

Ok, great thank you!

And I want to turn off Hosted Images. I mistakenly uploaded the wrong 500,000 images to it. Cloudflare says there's no really good way to delete them in bulk; if I cancel the Hosted Images subscription, it'll auto delete them in 30 days.

So yeah, I really don't want to use it anyway, and really just want to get rid of it.
